Parkinson’s Exercise Programs at Jackson YMCA
Exercise plays a vital role in managing Parkinson’s, supporting balance, mobility, and the ability to perform daily activities. Research demonstrates that regular physical activity can greatly enhance symptoms associated with Parkinson’s. The Jackson YMCA offers two specialized programs—Rock Steady Boxing and Pedaling for Parkinson’s—designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s improve their overall well-being.
How to Participate:
• Have a Parkinson’s diagnosis.
• Complete a signed form and medical release.
• Agree to periodic monitoring and progress assessments.
• Attend an orientation session with our Parkinson’s program staff.
Rock Steady Boxing:
This non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness program aims to enhance participants’ quality of life, self-confidence, and physical capabilities. It focuses on exercises that build speed, strength, balance, and flexibility, empowering participants to push their limits. Research indicates that high-intensity exercise may help slow the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms.
Pedaling for Parkinson’s:
Studies reveal that pedaling a bicycle at a consistent, rapid pace (80-90 revolutions per minute) can reduce Parkinson’s-related symptoms by up to 35%. Each session incorporates a warm-up, structured exercise, and a cool-down, all tailored to specific heart rate zones and carefully supervised by program facilitators. While not a cure, pedaling has been shown to offer substantial benefits.
